Mott MacDonald supports delivery of Crossrail programme at Paddington, UK

Paddington Elizabeth line station has been transferred from Crossrail Ltd to Transport for London (TfL). Mott MacDonald worked on the station for Crossrail Ltd progressing the design of Paddington Integrated Project (PIP) and leading the Plateau 2 station and integration team. The company has been involved throughout the duration of the Crossrail programme.

Mott MacDonald was appointed to progress the design of PIP which was developed through a close collaboration between Crossrail, London Underground, Network Rail and TfL. PIP was one of the first Crossrail construction projects to be commissioned and was essential enabling works for the new Elizabeth line station box, re-locating the taxi rank in Departures Road and freeing up space on the west side of the station. The project included creation of a new London Underground Hammersmith & City line station entrance onto the canal basin at Paddington Waterside and a new taxi facility which opened in 2012. PIP included feasibility, preliminary and detailed design as well as supporting Crossrail by providing technical advice on site during construction.

Mott MacDonald later led the Plateau 2 station and integration team, testing and commissioning team for Crossrail Ltd.

John Bettles, Mott MacDonald’s head of Plateau 2, said: “The ten stations on the Elizabeth line are being progressively handed over from Crossrail to TfL. The commissioning of Paddington brings the number of transferred stations to six. The testing and commissioning of the highly complex station systems and integration with routeway SCADA communications systems has been a huge challenge but adopting a collaborative integration approach across the various contracts and stakeholders has been absolutely key in the success of the stations programme.”

Julie Dakin, Mott MacDonald’s metros and civil regional director, said: “I worked on PIP which was the first phase of Crossrail’s impact on Paddington Station, bringing improved access and a high-quality passenger environment. It is great to see the new Elizabeth line station at Paddington handed over from Crossrail to TfL and I look forward to people using it next year.”
