Mott MacDonald secures significant ISO 19650 certification

Mott MacDonald has been awarded the kitemark for Building Information Modelling (BIM) by the British Standards Institute (BSI). The ISO 19650 standard is an international standard for managing information over the whole life cycle of a built asset using BIM.

The certification of Mott MacDonald UK and Mott MacDonald Bentley is part of a global drive to build robust approaches to information management. They are now certified to ISO 19650-1 and 19650-2, the global standards for the digitisation of construction information, including BIM, as well as ISO 19650-5, a security-minded approach to information management.

Clients are increasingly seeking reassurance of working with certified organisations and the kitemark is an industry-recognised mark of achievement. Certification to part 5 means Mott MacDonald is one of a very small number of organisations in the UK to have demonstrated the ability to manage information in a secure way.

Mott MacDonald completed a rigorous audit with the BSI team, demonstrating correct processes such as on client information requirements, BIM execution plans and information delivery plans, as well as on guidance and templates across multiple projects.

Evidence of secure common data environment usage and of an ability to define and work to required information security management systems secured ISO 19650-5. UK certification provides a solid framework on which to build a robust approach to information management globally.

A selection of projects helped satisfy the requirements of the audit, including work on HS2 which was specifically highlighted as it “represented, in the assessor’s opinion, best practice in comparison to other similar organisations and other similar projects. It is clear the organisation has made effective decisions based on the sheer amount of data/information being created and has chosen to use the ISO 19650-2 standard and client requirements to full effect.”

Steve Canadine, managing director buildings and cities at Mott MacDonald said: “Certification to ISO 19650 offers clients piece of mind and knowledge that they are getting the very best that the industry offers. Continually improving our standards in the built environment demonstrates Mott MacDonald’s commitment, through our purpose, to improve society by considering social outcomes in all we do, focusing on excellence and digital innovation.”

The UK certification is an important milestone in the implementation of the information management stream of Mott MacDonald’s group digital strategy. The Middle East business has also secured ISO 19650-1 and 19650-2.
