Mott MacDonald response to the Climate Change Committee report on decarbonisation of UK energy supplies

Mott MacDonald, the global engineering, management and development consultancy headquartered in the UK, has responded to today’s report from the Climate Change Committee on decarbonising the nation’s energy supply by echoing its call for the UK to take action now to maintain momentum in this area.

Ian Clarke, Mott MacDonald’s global sector leader for energy, said: “The UK has a lot to be proud of when it comes to adopting renewables and reducing emissions from our energy sector. What we have achieved over the past decade or more has given us a significant head start when it comes to the green energy transition.”

“However, the report from the Climate Change Committee today makes clear that we need to do much more to keep up the momentum and not fall behind other countries, particularly when places like the US and Europe are changing their own policies and deploying considerable resources to decarbonise their electricity supplies and take advantage of new technologies such as hydrogen.”

“In particular, we look forward to the inclusion of new measures in the forthcoming revised Net Zero Strategy to accelerate change when it comes to the resilience of our electricity and gas grids, improving the planning regime, and significantly expanding the number of people with the skills we need. We also need the public and private sector to work together to unlock the very significant levels of investment needed, and the Government to set out an ambitious strategy for deploying the new technologies that will underpin a fully decarbonised future energy system.”
