Risk and planning

Preparing for the unexpected.

Social, political, environmental and economic factors all have an impact on the delivery of major projects and programmes.

In an uncertain world with new challenges from extreme weather events, skilled worker shortages and the fluctuating cost of materials, projects face an increasing number and frequency of risks. Successful delivery also requires satisfying a wider range of stakeholders and achieving a broader set of outcomes.

Risk management and planning are two ways that we can help you navigate these uncertainties and drive success throughout the lifecycle of your project.

What can we do for you?

We use a tailored approach to identify, assess and control sources of project uncertainty and create resilient, adaptable plans that help you deliver programmes and projects with successful outcomes.

We offer:

Proactive risk management

A proactive approach is designed to address the tangible risks alongside the underlying constraints and assumptions involved in delivery.

Robust and realistic planning

Project owners need a high degree of confidence that the project team will deliver the expected outcomes with the time and resources available, and have the flexibility and resilience to respond to setbacks.

Clear and regular communication

With all project stakeholders it is important to clarify responsibilities and accountabilities, making sure you are consulting with the right people to keep everyone informed.

Services we provide

Strategic risk and planning for project success

We have an experienced network of risk and planning professionals, with many of them holding chartership or accreditation from the Association for Project Management, Institute of Risk Management or the Project Management Institute.

Our experience

We have provided risk and planning services to some of the largest and most complex projects and programmes across the world. Some of our recent work has included:

  • Alaskan Way viaduct replacement, Seattle, USA
As project management assistant consultant on this US$3.35bn (£2.5bn) megaproject, we helped the Washington Department of Transportation develop a project management plan and put in place controls and processes that were considered by the client to be a template for future large project delivery. This included the baselining of risk, use of a Monte Carlo analysis and rigorous risk monitoring throughout the project. The approach enabled risk money to be strategically retired to free up funds for other uses.
  • International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, Cadarache, France
In conjunction with our partner Altran Technologies, we provided project management services, including project planning, risk and opportunity management and project controls, to the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, a first-of-a-kind fusion reactor. We coordinated risk processes across the entirety of the project, facilitated proactive identification and management of risk, identifying procedural deficiencies in the risk management process, and provided practical solutions.
  • London power tunnels, UK
The delivery of new power tunnels is a crucial part of National Grid’s £940M investment plan to modernise the capital’s electricity transmission network. We held risk workshops with stakeholders, and helped manage high project risks while avoiding the significant cost of transferring these to their supply chain. We developed the strategy, configuration, development and implementation of client side risk management processes, risk analysis and reporting risk exposure for the project portfolio. As well as supporting project goals, the approach enabled National Grid to demonstrate risk management techniques to insurance providers.
  • NATO Alliance future surveillance and control, Luxembourg
NATO appointed us to support its decision making over the replacement of its fleet of Airborne Warning and Control System aircraft. We carried out a risk reduction feasibility study, conducted roadmapping and assessed the lifecycle costs, risk management and through-life management of over 20 constituent systems capable of providing future surveillance.
  • New Quito International Airport, Ecuador
We provided a comprehensive range of technical, commercial and critical risk management services to this airport project. With the site surrounded by active volcanoes, and topography making a phased opening impossible, risk management and scheduling were crucial. We monitored, assured and programme managed delivery of the airport, and took a hands-on role in critical risk management.
