Engineering

Engineering better outcomes.

The world’s infrastructure and natural systems are under severe pressure, with the impacts of climate change, population growth, growing inequality and economic uncertainty being felt around the globe.

It’s increasingly difficult for asset owners and operators to deliver what people and communities need. But when it is done well, engineering can provide the solutions.

We maximise the benefits of engineering projects by considering the connections they have with the world around them. By working to enhance economic, environmental and social outcomes, we can deliver transformational improvements for infrastructure, services, the natural environment, business and society.

What can we do for you?

Our engineering heritage stretches back more than 130 years.

We can help:

Deliver groundbreaking solutions

We apply technological innovation to design and deliver groundbreaking infrastructure solutions. We understand the route to successful adoption of new technology – from the challenges in deployment through to the value it can deliver.

Embed digital delivery

All our engineering projects are delivered digitally, giving us greater control and assurance of project data. By responsibly using and developing the latest digital technology, we are better placed to manage and harness information to enhance project delivery and outcomes.

Advance sustainable progress

We help you pursue your decarbonisation goals by applying carbon management on every project. Through our nature-based solutions, we also harness the potential of nature to support projects and reduce their impact on the environment. And by pioneering new industry-leading methods for understanding resilience, such as in responding to physical climate change risk, we identify and implement solutions to protect assets for the future.

Maximise social outcomes

We recognise that it’s not enough to deliver state-of-the-art infrastructure. To maximise the impact of a project, it’s essential to think about its purpose and long term legacy. We work with you to understand, target and deliver better social outcomes, including accessibility and inclusivity, health and wellbeing, and jobs, skills and training. We know that well engineered infrastructure can leave communities in a better place and create mutual benefit.

Services we provide

Engineering excellence across complex global projects

We bring together diverse skills, experience and insight, to deliver better outcomes across all types of projects and programmes.

Our experience

  • Alaskan Way Viaduct, Seattle, USA
A 50-year-old elevated section of State Route 99 on Seattle’s waterfront has been replaced by a 3.2km double-deck tunnel that is 17.3m wide. It is one of the largest-diameter bored tunnels in the world, and our alignment work reduced risk and project costs.
  • Auckland Airport expansion, New Zealand
This expansion programme includes a new 80,000m² domestic terminal integrated into the present international terminal. We are providing building services design, information and communications and architecture, among other services. We are enabling a highly collaborative working environment and the delivery of ambitious carbon targets through digital technology solutions.
  • Elizabeth Line, London, UK
Our 30-year journey to bring London’s newest rail line into operation included 42km of tunnels under the city’s streets and buildings. Our expertise in sequential excavation with sprayed concrete lining helped create vast subterranean caverns, measuring up to 17m high and 16.5m wide. And our innovative real-time site monitoring data and state-of-the-art 3D numerical analysis of ground movements enabled the 42m-deep Moorgate shaft – the deepest point on the line.
  • HS2 rail bridges, West Midlands, UK
Where the HS2 rail network crosses three existing lines, we designed bridges that were constructed offline and moved into position in just hours, causing minimal disruption to existing services. The bridges, each weighing up to 6200t, were either picked up and wheeled into position or slid and hauled into place using powerful jacks.
  • Kidston pumped hydropower storage, Queensland, Australia
A former gold mine in Australia is being turned into a 250MW battery capable of powering 140,000 homes for up to eight hours. We’ve designed the overall project layout as well as the intake canal, water conveyance tunnels and shafts.
  • New Hospital Programme, UK
This programme aims to deliver 40 new or upgraded NHS facilities in England by 2030, by adopting digital technology, modern methods of construction and standardisation. We are leading the interim delivery partner team on transformational design (such as digitalisation and standardisation) and programme management.
  • San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, USA
After the collapse of a section on the eastern side, we worked on the replacement, a 624m self-anchored suspension bridge capable of withstanding seismic events. Innovations include a single continuous cable that loops around the deck ends, yielding a self-contained structural system that is highly resilient, and seismic joints between the deck segments that act like fuses.
  • Tideway, London, UK
This 25km tunnel will divert combined sewer overflows away from the River Thames and convey them to a treatment works. Our work on the eastern section includes five shafts, with depths of up to 60m, and two tunnels of 5.5km and 4.5km in length through southeast London.

Carbon Portal

Identify, calculate, and reduce embodied and operational carbon emissions. This infrastructure carbon calculator is aligned to PAS 2080, the international specification for managing carbon across the built environment (co-authored by Mott MacDonald). It allows anyone across your business and supply chain to identify and calculate carbon emissions, not just carbon experts.
