Mott MacDonald Canada is seeking a Principal Tunnel Engineer to join our expanding team, contributing to high-profile infrastructural projects both locally and globally. This role involves leading engineering efforts on iconic projects, ensuring innovative and sustainable solutions. In this key role, the Principal Tunnel Engineer will be responsible for the following: 
 

  • Developing design solutions, and associated deliverables, drawing on a range of geotechnical and structural skills, including: tunnel, shaft, cavern, support of excavation, and underground structural design

  • Act as the senior member of the team to lead complex underground projects

  • Assist in the coordination of work among other engineers and design staff

  • Deliver design work packages, collaborating with external and internal stakeholders, ensuring quality control, managing inputs from team members, and travel to project sites when necessary

  • Enhance the team’s capabilities by promoting technical excellence and digital innovation

  • Support project commercial management, and proposal delivery

  • Interface with owners such as transport and water authorities and contractors for design and construction projects

  • Express the contribution of your work in the context of social outcomes

  • Explore various career development paths, including, technical leadership, staff resource management, and client engagement

 

Candidate Specification:
 

  • Master’s degree in Geological, Geotechnical, or Civil / Structural Engineering from an accredited university

  • At least 15 years of relevant industry / project experience in tunnelling or structural/geotechnical engineering design & construction for tunnels, caverns, shafts, and other underground structures

  • Chartered status with a relevant professional body (for example P.Eng, C.Eng)

  • Strong collaboration skills between design and construction teams, with a focus on building and maintaining relationships.

  • Project & design management experience, from feasibility & tender through to construction

  • Advanced knowledge in developing innovative underground structure solutions using current design standards and guidelines

  • Capability with numerical analysis software (geotechnical/structural) experience

  • Ability and enthusiasm for supervising the work of others, including check and approval of key deliverables

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with a focus on developing junior staff and nurturing professional relationships.
