Describe what the Mott Mac Life means to you in three words

Our business is… responsible, collaborative and agile.

Tell us about your specialism and why you chose it

I wanted to kickstart my career by getting experience in the workplace alongside industry professionals and develop my engineering skills. I chose Mott MacDonald because it offered an apprenticeship experience in a welcoming environment and the company takes the development of early careers seriously. As a building services engineer, I contribute to innovative designs that improve the safety and wellbeing of building occupants.

What do you enjoy about working here?

I appreciate how my colleagues are happy to help me to perform different tasks and learn new skills. My apprenticeship course offers many challenges that present opportunities to learn on the job from software like AutoCAD, producing and delivering presentations or learning to read and produce different kinds of drawings, models, calcs and reports. I’m excited for the opportunities I’ll have and the challenges once I have achieved my qualifications.

How has your career progressed since joining? / How has Mott MacDonald invested in your career?

I started working for Mott MacDonald as an Advanced apprentice working in a level 3 college course. Since completing my level 3 course and achieving my qualifications, Mott MacDonald was happy for me to progress to a degree level course in university, furthering my development as an engineer. The development of early career professionals is prioritised, creating plenty of opportunities to develop my skills through attending continued professional development courses or working on different projects.

What have you learnt while working at Mott MacDonald?

By working on various projects at different design stages with colleagues and clients, I've learned to produce work to a high standard in line with client requirements. I have developed knowledge in engineering design and building information modelling, and I have also learned how much of an impact engineering has on our day to day lives in terms of comfort and safety.

How do you demonstrate Technical Excellence in your work?

By learning from university and directly from experience in the company and with clients, I can apply what I learn directly to my work. I use the communication and technical skills I have gained in my day-to-day work to produce high quality drawings, reports, calcs and other work to satisfy client requirements. These skills are crucial for solving any problems I encounter in a project and producing high quality work.
