The Vine

Easing congestion and cutting costs

Project Overview

33
bus rapid transit stations
The Vine reduces travel time for residents of Vancouver, Washington up to 10 minutes in each direction.

Opportunity

The busiest transit corridor for C-TRAN, the transit agency for Clark County in Washington State, is Fourth Plain, with almost two million trips per year. Overcrowding and delays have been the result.

A new bus rapid transit (BRT) system called The Vine aimed to correct those problems. Running six miles (10 km) from downtown Vancouver to the Westfield Vancouver Mall, The Vine would serve riders with 60-foot (18-meter) low-floor hybrid buses that can carry 90 to 110 passengers.

The project included the construction and installation of 33 BRT stations, expanded maintenance and parking facilities, and a new transit center.

Solution

Mott MacDonald and our subcontractors worked directly with the C-TRAN project management and design teams, and with the three major construction contractors. We held weekly project meetings to discuss project safety, construction progress, work schedule, communication, and other issues.

Outcome

Completed in 2017, The Vine improves reliability, reduces operations and maintenance costs, improves safety and security, makes access easier for pedestrians and bicyclists, and reduces travel time up to 10 minutes in each direction.
