New Jersey American Water PFAS treatment

A trusted advisor since 2007

Project Overview

10
projects totaling 50 million gallons per day
Mott MacDonald has worked closely with New Jersey American Water on a range of projects to manage PFAS.

Opportunity

The largest investor-owned water utility in the state, New Jersey American Water with water systems in serving 190 communities in 18 counties. The company is a subsidiary of the nation’s largest investor-owned water utility company, American Water, with 14 regulated state subsidiaries.

Recognizing the potential health issues associated with PFAS, New Jersey American Water addressed the problem well before maximum contaminant levels were established, by performing evaluations that would determine treatment alternatives, then implementing treatment systems.

Solution

Since 2007, Mott MacDonald has worked closely with New Jersey American Water on ten separate projects with a total capacity of nearly 50 million gallons per day (MGD).

These projects have involved a full range of services including treatability analysis, facility siting, environmental constraint/permitting evaluations, rapid small-scale column testing, pilot testing of treatment alternatives, detailed design, construction engineering, and facility commissioning.

Outcome

Our team has designed facilities that use granular activated carbon and ion exchange, and helped deliver them using conventional and design-build methods.

Most designs have retrofitted PFAS treatment into existing treatment facilities. Some facility designs include advanced oxidation processes consisting of low-pressure UV and hydrogen peroxide to treat 1,4-dioxane.

New Jersey American Water continues to be a leader in implementing PFAS treatment, and is actively developing strategies to provide optimal solutions. As a trusted advisor, we will continue to work collaboratively with New Jersey American Water to ensure long-term compliance with PFAS regulations.
