Electrical networks

Transforming electricity networks.

Accessible, efficient, and flexible transmission and distribution networks are critical to meeting the demand for electricity while achieving carbon and resilience targets.

An unprecedented quantity of new infrastructure is needed as part of a global transition towards a decarbonized, enlarged, and more flexible electricity system.

There are challenges around planning and consents, regulation, and the routing of cables and interconnectors, while project delivery is constrained by stretched supply chains and shortages of key materials, equipment, and expertise.

You need a partner who understands renewables and changing grid requirements and is experienced in planning and delivering major transmission and distribution infrastructure.

What can we do for you?

We work closely with energy network operators, utilities, developers, and original equipment manufacturers to plan, design, and deliver transmission and distribution infrastructure projects worldwide. We can help you:

Plan comprehensively

We work with you to formulate an outstanding concept and business case, achieve planning and environmental consents, and engage with local communities to obtain the social license to proceed.

Design optimally

We use smart digital tools, modeling, automation, and mapping to design resilient assets that meet the demands of the physical environment and complex technical and regulatory requirements.

Deliver strategically

We can help you choose the right delivery model, procurement strategy and partners to secure valuable resources and deliver your project in the required timeframe.

Services we provide

Powering the future with smart electrical networks

Our multidisciplinary, experienced teams work across the world and can support you at every stage of the project lifecycle.

Our experience

We have decades of experience designing and delivering electricity networks for energy clients in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australasia. Some of our recent project highlights include:

  • HVDC interconnectors, Europe
We have supported lenders in financing approximately £3bn of infrastructure, which is currently under construction and scheduled to come into operation between 2024 and 2028, providing technical due diligence and construction monitoring.
  • Interconnector, Singapore
We’re providing owner’s engineer services including feasibility study, design and tender strategy for a GW scale solar generation and energy storage project in South East Asia connecting to Singapore through undersea cables. The project will reduce Singapore’s reliance on natural gas in its energy mix and is a significant step towards supporting Singapore’s Green Plan 2030.
  • London Power Tunnels 2, UK
We’ve provided integrator and technical advisory services, including project management and engineering assurance, to this National Grid project to improve the resilience and capacity of electrical transmission networks in London. The work, which is being delivered through a collaborative enterprise delivery model, involves the building of a 32.5km cable tunnel network in south London which will house six new transmission circuits.
  • North Sea wind power hub, Europe
We’ve developed conceptual and outline designs, cost estimates, 3D visualisations, and schedules for this flagship program to create an offshore hub linking wind energy systems across northern Europe and enabling hydrogen production.
  • Offshore transmission owner (OFTO) support, UK
Since the 2006 inception of the OFTO licensing regime, which applies to transmission infrastructure for offshore wind in Great Britain, we have advised on over £1bn in assets at preferred bidder stage. We continue to undertake operations monitoring on behalf of lenders for four OFTOs, as well as providing specialist advice direct to the OFTOs.
  • SSEN HVDC programme, UK
We’re helping Scottish & Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN), one of the UK’s major network operators, to deliver an ambitious program of high voltage transmission infrastructure enabling it to connect wind farms in remote parts of Scotland with the grid.
  • Wataynikaneyap transmission project, Canada
We’re acting as the lenders’ adviser for this project to bring reliable and environmentally sound energy to remote First Nations communities in northern Ontario, Canada, which will involve transmission and distribution infrastructure spanning 1700km.

Route Optimizer

Route Optimizer equips planners and designers to find the most efficient alignment for pipelines, taking into account environmental and social constraints alongside capital and operational costs. A clear and intuitive web-based graphic interface assists stakeholder engagement and communication to support effective decision-making.
