Air

Building capability in the skies.

Air forces must be able to deploy rapidly across the globe, providing an ever-ready capability in a complex world.

The infrastructure to maintain that capability requires careful planning and development through programs that last many years. Yet shifts in geopolitics and technology often happen on much shorter timescales.

Getting air defense infrastructure programs right is a balancing act. You need to bring stakeholders together, get the technical details right first time, and keep on track with schedules and budgets, while remaining adaptable to challenges from a changing environment.

What can we do for you?

Mott MacDonald can act as your partner, helping to navigate this complexity to shape and successfully deliver air defense infrastructure.

Provide clarity through collaboration. By bringing a collaborative and open mindset, we engage end users and stakeholders to clarify the program vision and objectives, requirements, challenges, and opportunities — creating focus.

Build in agility. We can help you plan the development of your infrastructure program throughout its lifecycle, building in flexibility and adaptability so that you are ready to respond to future uncertainties.

Offer technical excellence. Whether we are designing infrastructure or providing assurance and oversight with supply chain partners, we have the technical expertise and attention to detail to deliver the right projects the right way, and the management know-how to keep the whole project team focused on your desired outcomes.

Services we provide

Innovative air defense systems for modern security

Our multidisciplinary offering runs from the strategic to the technical. We work on projects of every scale, from individual aircraft hangars or buildings to multiyear air base programs worth billions of dollars. We can support air defense programs and infrastructure at every stage of the project lifecycle.

Our experience

We have over four decades of defense sector experience and work on air infrastructure projects in Europe, the Middle East, North America, and Australasia. Our recent work has included:

  • Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee, USA
For a new vehicle fueling station, we designed tanks, piping, fuel truck loading and unloading stations, fuel dispensers, emergency fuel shutoff system, canopies, roadways, and more.
  • Five Eyes and NATO
We are defense consultant to the Five Eyes Security Alliance and NATO in support of their domestic and overseas programs.
  • RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus
We produced a development plan for this air base used by British Forces in Cyprus, showing how infrastructure could be improved over 25 years to benefit service personnel and their families.
  • RAF Lakenheath, UK
We acted as the Defence Infrastructure Organisation’s delivery partner for the ongoing £350 million F-35 subprogram, delivering infrastructure for the arrival of the first F-35 aircraft at RAF Lakenheath, which hosts the US Visiting Forces in the UK.
  • RAF Lossiemouth, UK
We delivered a detailed design for runway surfaces and infrastructure that enabled RAF Lossiemouth to accommodate larger modern aircraft and supported successful construction against a challenging schedule.
  • Stewart International Airport, New York, USA
For the 105th Airlift Wing of the Air National Guard, based at Stewart International Airport, we helped modernize the corrosion control hangar in support of the C-17 Beddown mission.

Land Management

Land Management captures and makes available information about land ownership and access that is essential for smooth project development. The solution records and provides instant access to these details, plus information on surveys and stakeholder communications.

Carbon Portal

Identify, calculate, and reduce embodied and operational carbon emissions. This infrastructure carbon calculator is aligned to PAS 2080, the international specification for managing carbon across the built environment (coauthored by Mott MacDonald). It allows anyone across your business and supply chain to identify and calculate carbon emissions, not just carbon experts.
