Sameer Patel: From London to Seattle

I’ve always loved to travel, but I never imagined that I would live abroad. However, one day, while working in London, I received an unexpected call from a good friend at Mott MacDonald: “Sameer, there’s a fantastic systems engineering project in Seattle. Are you interested?”

Having spent several years in the rail industry, I knew that the US has been experiencing a surge in rail construction, and my experience in the UK could translate in a very useful way.

The idea of moving to Seattle caught me off guard, I had never seriously considered it. However, my adventurous spirit kicked in, and that’s how my journey with Mott MacDonald in the United States began.

Having spent several years in the rail industry, I knew that the US has been experiencing a surge in rail construction, and my experience in the UK could translate in a very useful way. I was very excited by the opportunity as well, specifically to contribute to the creation of a brand-new railway —one that would benefit and connect the Greater Seattle Metro community.

Starting a new job is always a mix of excitement and nerves and doing it in a foreign country amplifies those feelings. As my move to Seattle drew closer, the anticipation grew. Visa formalities, flight bookings, and temporary accommodation arrangements occupied my mind. Thankfully, Mott MacDonald’s global mobility team provided invaluable assistance throughout the process. Their support eased my transition and allowed me to focus on the adventure ahead.

Arriving in Seattle, I discovered that Americans are remarkably friendly. In no time at all, I formed strong bonds with colleagues at work and made friends outside the office. Interestingly, Seattle hosts a sizable community of expats from the UK, many of whom work at Mott MacDonald. Their shared experiences helped me settle into my new life.

So here I am, embracing the Pacific Northwest (PNW), surrounded by water, mountains, coffee shops, and the vibrant spirit of Seattle. Prior to my move here, I had no idea about this part of the United States. Having grown up in London, I never considered myself an outdoorsy person. But the PNW turns everyone into an outdoor enthusiast. I've discovered new passions since relocating. The lakes and breathtaking hiking trails are spectacular during summer months, and during the winter months I find myself skiing every week at the nearby mountain resorts.

Moving abroad was both terrifying and exhilarating. But it's also been profoundly rewarding. If you ever have the chance to live in another country, take it! Even if it's a temporary adventure, the memories, the growth, and the perspective gained are invaluable.
