We are currently hiring a Senior Coastal Engineer with 8+ years of experience to join our West Coast engineering team. Mott MacDonald is a full-service engineering company focused on the development and rehabilitation of port and harbor infrastructure, dredging planning and design, planning and development of renewable energy projects, and improving coastal resiliency of coastal/port infrastructure and habitats. Typical projects include shoreline/habitat protection and stabilization, waterfront parks, port and marina infrastructure assessment and design, offshore wind enabling infrastructure project development, and civil engineering.  
 
Primary job responsibilities may include: 

  • Lead direction of both coastal engineering led, and multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Lead concept, preliminary, and detailed design of coastal infrastructure and dredging. 
  • Civil engineering design, review of geotechnical assessments, hydraulics and hydrology, and other miscellaneous civil engineering tasks. 
  • Assessment of coastal processes such as currents, waves, storm surge, sediment transport, and coastal/estuarine morphology and compound flooding. 
  • Mentor mid and junior level staff, and collaborate with multiple principals, managers, and project engineers to execute projects, develop clients and opportunities.
  • Support projects across the USA, Canada, and Caribbean.
  • Drive and oversee performance baseline management (scope, budget, schedule) and work with sub-consultants and team members and assure quality control of work throughout project execution and delivery. 
  • Collaborate with market leads and development managers to facilitate the successful identification and tracking of clients, opportunities, and proposals.  
  • Communicate effectively and interface with clients, regulatory agencies, stakeholders, and other Mott MacDonald professionals across the US and Canada.  
  • Collaboration with Mott MacDonald practices across North America and abroad and contribute to the development of technical excellence.  

 

Job Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Coastal, Civil, and/or Ocean Engineering or related field. 
  • 8+ years of engineering design experience. 
  • Board Certification in Coastal Engineering by ACOPNE is preferred but not required
  • Demonstrated experience and success with the development of statements of qualifications and other procurement processes. 
  • Demonstrated technical and analytical skills, including technical writing and presentation skills. 
  • Experience with industry standard analysis and design software. 
  • Experience with variety of client types, including state and federal government, and private entities.  
  • Experience in consulting engineering across entire lifecycle of project.  
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written. 
  • Experience with US standards and guidelines including: USACE, PIANC, ASCE, etc. 
  • Experience with industry standard coastal modeling tools.  
  • Desire to work in a team environment and to mentor and develop staff.  
  • Experience managing complex dredging, coastal and waterfront engineering projects. 
  • Engineering design experience in coastal or port engineering industry. 
  • P.E. License (WA preferred), or equivalent required. 
  • Flexibility to travel regionally. 

 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Demonstrated teamwork and leadership skills. 
  • Communication and collaboration skills in a team setting to execute and manage project staff and subconsultants. 
  • Post-graduate degree in Coastal, Ocean, or Civil Engineering with a focus on Coastal, Hydraulic, Ocean or Port Engineering. 
  • Experience with coastal engineering design in urban settings such as shoreline protection, waterfront parks, shoreline restoration, flood control, navigation facilities, bulkheads, dredging, and recreational boating facilities. 
  • Experience in Washington and Oregon
  • Experience in habitat creation and/or protection projects, and the application of coastal resiliency principles.   
  • Experience with environmental remediation dredging design and construction 
  • Familiar with design of navigation channels and marinas.  
  • Familiar with application of MIKE (or equivalent) suite of numerical modeling analysis tools.  
  • Desire to develop markets and accounts to support regional growth.  
  • Experience in working on teams of multidisciplinary, urban-focused flood protection and resiliency projects. 
  • Knowledge of best practices for marine and coastal construction. 
  • Experience with contractor engagement and constructability analysis of complex, multidisciplinary projects. 
  • Experience with leading the development of studies to support permitting (e.g., JARPA, No net rise study, Letter of Map Amendment, etc.).

Salary Range: $140,000- $171,000
