As a principal engineer, with experience in large pump station design for water, wastewater, combined sewer and stormwater infrastructure projects, you will serve as design manager for detailed design and construction projects and be responsible for the technical development of proposals.
You will continue to provide industry-leading water pumping solutions right through the project lifecycle, with value added through client-side support as well as construction phases. Working as part of an integrated project team, being the lead engineering pioneer to impact outcomes and collaborate with stakeholders to form best practices for outcomes-based projects.
Your Purpose
- Manage a team to undertake technical design work following relevant design standards and codes, and to high-quality levels.
- Prepare technical memos, scopes of work, and input into bid proposals.
- Successfully manage time and budgets to key project milestones and programs.
- Work closely with teams in California, North America, Canada and overseas to deliver integrated design solutions.
- Adhere to quality assurance standards in design.
- Manage a team: project workloads and resources, oversee line management and goal setting, and support, guide, and coach your team to ensure the best results are produced.
What you can bring
- Licensed Professional Engineer.
- Experience in large pump station design delivery, including engagement of multidisciplinary design resources.
- In depth knowledge and application of Hydraulic Institute standards.
- Sound knowledge of pump system hydraulics and various pump types and configurations.
- Proficiency in designing within appropriate digital analysis packages, following local and national guidance. i.e., Water/Sewer GEMS, Pipe-Flow or similar.
- Experience in physical modeling of pump stations, 480 Vac and medium voltage VFDs, factory witness testing, pump controls, large valves, vibration testing and commissioning/startup.
- Promotion and implementation of Innovation in design delivery, construction methodology and asset operation.
The position will play a critical role in Mott MacDonald’s Water Sector growth, ensuring quality technical deliverables on our client’s capital delivery schemes.
Knowledge of potable water, wastewater, combined sewer and stormwater conveyance systems and treatment is preferred and a background in utilities or a similar infrastructure business is required to lead a civil engineering team. You will ideally have extensive experience to line manage, mentor, and supervise the work of others.
Responsibilities are as following:
- Provide technical leadership for large water/wastewater/combined sewer/stormwater pump station projects, using appropriate design methodology to give assurance that intended outcomes are identified and achieved.
- Leadership in compiling quality deliverables of preliminary and detail design documents.
- Manage and coordinate multiple projects engaging a multidisciplinary design approach.
- Planning and design of major water / wastewater / combined sewer / stormwater pumping facility projects with focus on large pump stations (i.e. greater than 50 MGD).
- Provide specialist advice on the interpretation and application of design criteria, resolving complex or contentious technical queries and issues and enabling others to take appropriate actions.
- Leading, mentoring, and supporting the technical development of design staff within the region.
- Hire key positions to support growth for Mott MacDonald in the Water sector and develop design hubs throughout North America.
- Drive a culture of innovation by creating multi-stakeholder solutions that boost creativity, innovation, and collaboration across design teams.
- Clarify roles and responsibilities within the design team and ensure project compliance with the organization's processes and procedures.
- Manage the project design review process; provide stakeholders with accurate and relevant information and key recommendations to evaluate progress and agree on change.
- Act as subject matter expert in an area of technology, policy, regulation, or operational management for the team.
- Manage and liaise with contractors and sub-contractors working in an integrated design team.
- Liaise with customers, internal and external stakeholders to ensure successful project delivery.
- Maintain external accreditations and in-depth understanding of current and emerging external regulation and industry best practices through continuing professional development, attending conferences, and reading specialist media.
- Present at industry association conferences and author publications.
- Building on the strong foundation of water, wastewater and stormwater projects, help us increase our market share across North America.
- Growing and nurturing external relationships and build and maintain strong networks with key clients, business partners and competitors, driving joint initiatives where appropriate and using these networks to influence, close deals and impact the growth and direction of the business.
- Ensure technical excellence and best practice in the delivery of project outputs.
- Approve technical solutions, including standards and variations to standards.
- Quality assurance following the relevant company Check, Review and Approve processes and QA management requirements.
The ideal candidate will have the following experience:
- Bachelor's degree in engineering. Master’s degree preferred.
- 15+ years’ experience in the design of large pump stations.
- Professional engineering license (PE) in any State with eligibility for reciprocal licensing in California.
- Significant experience in public infrastructure projects, preferably including water or wastewater utilities.
- Significant experience in managing project teams of multiple concurrent projects.
- Experienced with industry standards relevant to water/wastewater/stormwater pump stations.
- Working in a multi-disciplinary environment.
- Ability to network within a regional and global organization.
- Demonstrated innovation and creative thinking.
- Demonstrated ability to develop technical skills amongst junior staff.
- A multiple disciplinary perspective to the water business, with an ability work collaboratively with related technical service.
