About the business unit
We help conceive, drive, and implement transport solutions for cities, regions, and asset owners/operators around the globe. From preparing the business case and​ advising on related issues - such as revenue, procurement, and environmental legislation - to delivering the completed infrastructure and helping maintain it. Our planning, engineering, environmental and management skills cover the whole project cycle. We play a major role in developing and delivering the Global Transport Sector Strategy.

 

Overview of role
The Technology & Systems(T&S) team within Mott MacDonald provides a diverse range of software, systems and related digital and data services for clients throughout the UK, internationally and within the Mott MacDonald group.  We provide a dynamic, project-orientated environment, with teams involved in the full lifecycle of software, system and technical service delivery. 

 

While our primary domain is in the Transport sector, we increasingly provide transferable technical capabilities across multiple domains supporting cross-sector projects. The combination of these allows us to play our part in Mott MacDonald’s carbon neutral certification and improving social outcomes objectives. 

 

With the growth in demand for Data Engineering and related skills across the business and our client based, we are expanding our existing capabilities with a new Data Engineer position. You will be based out of one of our UK offices, with a hybrid blend of home-based and office-based working. 

 

The Data Engineer will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining data pipelines and architectures for internal and external client facing technology and infrastructure projects. This role involves working with large datasets, ensuring data quality, and collaborating with data scientists and analysts to support data-driven decision-making. 
 
Role Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and maintain scalable data architectures and databases. 
  • Design and implement data pipelines to collect, process, transform and store data from various sources. 
  • Ensure data quality and integrity through monitoring and validation. 
  • Collaborate with data scientists, analysts, software engineers and users to understand data requirements and deliver solutions. 
  • Optimize data processing workflows for performance and efficiency. 
  • Implement data security and privacy measures in compliance with corporate governance and regulations. 
  • Stay updated on the latest data engineering trends and technologies. 

 

Candidate Specification
As a Data Engineer you will be able to work autonomously within a technology team and supported by management and technical colleagues across the UK to ensure tasks are completed and delivered to a high standard within our established processes and procedures. With a constantly evolving portfolio of diverse and unique projects, this role will provide the successful candidate the opportunity to work across multiple teams for a variety of clients.

 

Within the team, you will work within a structured environment which promotes the delivery of quality services to our clients and provides a framework for your continued growth. You will have the opportunity to be mentored by a talented technical team, who will set and support you in meeting challenging goals, ensuring your continued learning and development. The role may include working directly with our clients, remotely and occasionally on-site, and will provide the opportunity to contribute innovation into our solutions.

 

Essential

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related field. 
  • Proven experience in data engineering or in a similar role. 
  • Proficiency in programming languages and tools such as Python, Java, Powerapps or related. 
  • Experience with business intelligence or analytics tools such as Tableau and Microsoft Power BI.  
  • Knowledge of ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes and tools such as FME. 

 

Desirable

  • Experience of geospatial datasets, remote sensing data and GIS tools. 
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms, particularly Microsoft Azure.  
  • Proficiency in SQL and database design with tools including Microsoft SQL Server or PostgreSQL. 
  • Experience with data processing frameworks e.g. Apache Spark, Hadoop or Databricks.
