Work experience

There’s no better way to learn and experience being part of a team. You bring the determination and enthusiasm, and we’ll teach you the rest.

Are you interested in learning more about the world around you? Do you have an interest in or enjoy studying Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths (STEM)?

If the answer is yes, and you’d love to see how STEM subjects are applied to the real world, then our Finding Your Future work experience programme could be just the thing for you. There is a vast array of STEM careers to consider and there will be more coming in the future and probably not yet identified, and we will need a diverse range of people to be ready to do them.

Not only will a work experience placement at Mott MacDonald give you an inside look at what it’s like working for a global engineering and management consultancy, but you’ll also gain first-hand knowledge of the diverse range of career possibilities our industry has to offer.

What to expect?

You will be assigned a host team, who will mentor you throughout the week and answer all your questions. You will have a choice of three mini projects to complete, which will deepen your understanding of the sector and develop your employability skills. Completing the Finding Your Future work experience programme will lead to you gaining a Silver Level Industrial Cadets Award.

Who can apply?

Anyone in years 10-13 who is interested in learning about careers in STEM, this may be the right thing for them. You do not need to know anything about the industry, just a willingness and enthusiasm to learn and make the most of the opportunity!

Our inclusive work experience is available to anyone between the ages of 14-18 who has not yet started higher education. We offer work experience in the office, however we can arrange a virtual placement, if this is required, so you do not need to be close to an office to apply.

Applications for our Summer 2025 work experience programme are now open.

Due to the high volume of interest we are receiving, we may need to close the application process earlier than the stated deadline of 31st January 2025 if we reach the maximum limit of applications.

Once again, our work experience programme proved to be a huge success in 2024, and we received some great feedback from students:

Just wanted to say thank you for the opportunity for doing work experience at Mott MacDonald; I really enjoyed it and got a lot out of the experience. I particularly enjoyed working in the office with everyone else, it felt like a real work environment, and I appreciated the opportunity to speak to the engineers at the company. I will be having work experience in year 12 and I am hopeful to do it with Mott MacDonald again.

I would like to express my gratitude for the incredible opportunity to participate in a work experience at Mott MacDonald in July 2024. Thank you for your time and effort put into organising all the activities and providing me with such an amazing week of talks and the project that allowed me to gain a great insight into an engineering consultancy company.

Just a quick note to say thank you for providing our student with such an amazing work experience placement. Your company go above and beyond for these students, giving back to the community and inspiring the next generation of engineers. Special thanks to your host, who was brilliant in passing on her knowledge and experience. Hopefully, you will be able to do the same for another one of our students next year.
