Paul Smedley

Paul is operations and commercial director for our UK & Europe region.

He joined Mott MacDonald in 2015 as general manager of our Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) design and build team. At MMB, Paul led more than 400 colleagues in the successful delivery of engineering solutions for our UK water and sewerage company clients across the UK.

In his current role, Paul is responsible for driving operational best practice and improvement in our UK & Europe region’s commercial performance. Paul has successfully deployed his client and operational experience to deliver a significant improvement in our profitability, focussing on project management, project losses and management of cash. Since Paul took on the role, our UK & Europe region has reduced net working capital, and project losses as a proportion of the region’s revenue have improved. The outcome is our largest region operating at a return on capital employed greater than 100%.

In addition to driving improved performance, Paul also leads our UK & Europe property, procurement and business management systems audit teams. Paul is also a Chartered Engineer and a member of the Chartered Institution of Water & Environmental Management, The Institute of Civil Engineers, and the Association of Project Management.

Paul is a leader with integrity and resilience and operates a strong external network. A critical thinker, he actively listens to all views but is not afraid to challenge. Paul is a role model for empowering and coaching others to achieve their best.
