Technical Excellence to me is being aware of what is happening in the industry, learning on the job and applying it to the work I do.
Opportunities, acknowledgement, acceptance
I enjoy the variety of work that comes my way and the opportunity to work with various individuals across the UK (and sometimes outside the UK) on projects.
I actually fell into my specialism of civil engineering, having been guided by my Dad. I haven’t regretted it though as it has given me opportunities to serve society in numerous ways. There’s always the need to maintain or develop infrastructure for the use of humanity.
I’m mainly involved in highways and pavement engineering schemes. It is important to ensure that our roads are safe by maintaining them to appropriate standards or developing roads to improve the movement of people, goods, and services. Highways and pavement engineers have a major role in getting these delivered. It always gives me great pleasure to see my decisions on drawings and specifications being implemented.
I chose Mott MacDonald mainly because of our employee-ownership model and the fact that we have offices worldwide which could offer prospects to work on projects from across the globe. The location of my assigned office was also a manageable commute, which worked well with my parental responsibilities.
Apart from the various experiences I’ve had on projects, I’ve learnt how to manage people and confirmed my belief that happy people are more productive.
Technical Excellence to me is being aware of what is happening in the industry, learning on the job and applying it to the work I do. I demonstrate it by doing my best to ensure that I undertake thorough checks on drawings and documents I’m asked to review; transferring my design skills to others to support knowledge-sharing and ensuring re-iteration of work is kept to a minimum.
