Green Square Urban Renewal water management, Australia

We developed the water management strategy for the Green Square Urban Renewal regeneration programme in Sydney's oldest industrial area, one of the largest urban renewal projects in Australia.

Green Square Urban Renewal area is located between the Sydney central business district, Sydney International Airport and Port Botany. We developed the stormwater management strategy for City of Sydney Council for the Sheas Creek catchment that contains the development. We were also commissioned to assist with sewer masterplanning and Water Services Coordinator services for the Green Square Town Centre and Epsom Park Precincts. We worked closely with the City of Sydney and Sydney Water to progress the masterplanning for the sites.

We also helped the preferred development team with the infrastructure planning and detailed cost planning.

Challenges and solutions

This inner city renewal site presented immense challenges in terms of water management and integration with existing services, in addition to the management and coordination of authority approvals, and the addressing of traffic and access outcomes. The project aims to achieve best practice sustainability outcomes.

We provided innovative solutions that acknowledged property ownership, delivery staging challenges, environmental responsibilities and cost constraints. We identified a number of key project risks, including:

  • Potential impacts on major Sydney water trunk stormwater assets.

  • Potential contaminated land and the need for a remediation strategy.

Value and benefits

Our long experience of urban infrastructure masterplanning ensured that conflicts between infrastructure systems and their development programmes that could have caused major delays and cost over-runs were avoided.

Our innovative solutions acknowledged property ownership, delivery staging challenges, environmental responsibilities and cost constraints.
