Mott MacDonald has been appointed as city infrastructure engineer for the first phase of THE LINE, which forms part of NEOM, the region taking shape in northwest Saudi Arabia.
In this role Mott MacDonald will be responsible for driving management and control of vertical and horizontal structures and city utility systems, focussing on the efficiency and sustainability of the design for a functional, constructable and operable city.
Mott MacDonald will work closely with THE LINE’s design, development and project delivery teams in NEOM, including Delugan Meissl Associate Architects (DMAA) as urban designer leading the concept and detailed masterplan of phase one, and Gensler as city planning consultant leading on city design coordination and city planning.
THE LINE is a pioneering linear city that aims to establish a transformative and sustainable urban environment, combining the vibrancy of city living with green spaces and access to nature.
Cathy Travers, Group Managing Director, Mott MacDonald, said: “THE LINE is a hugely complex project with an ambition to change the way we think about urban living. It requires deep technical expertise across multiple engineering disciplines, planning and design, and alongside our partners we are well placed to realise this vision.”
Denis Hickey, Chief Development Officer, THE LINE, said: “As development and construction of THE LINE progresses, we have established a unique partnership that brings world-leading city design and engineering expertise to deliver phase one. Collaboration is at the core of this, with a city-wide best practice group that will showcase how innovation can change the way we consider, design and build cities forever. This reflects the broader ambitions of Saudi Vision 2030 to create lasting change.”
