Sumita Tono wind farm achieves financial close, Japan

Japanese wind farm development Sumita Tono has achieved financial close. Mott MacDonald supported Green Power Investment Corporation and Pattern Energy Group as lenders’ technical advisor on the project, which is expected to reach commercial operation in 2022.

Sumita Tono windfarm features 27 Vestas V117 4.2MW wind turbines totalling 113.4MW of installed capacity and once completed, will be capable of providing clean energy to power around 30,000 households. The project is part of the Iwate Prefecture programme which promotes the development of renewable energy to boost local economies. It is expected to provide new job opportunities to the local community during its construction and operations phases.

Osamu Ohta, Mott MacDonald’s wind account leader in Japan, said: "Our team of specialists undertook reviews of designs, construction contracts, programs, permits and financial models for this project, which supported the banks in their diligence of the project. We are proud to be involved in this initiative, which supports the energy transition in Japan and enables another CO2 free generation asset to be constructed.”
