ESG and sustainability

Fresh thinking to manage risk and maximise positive impacts.

Creating and operating needs-based, sustainable infrastructure acts a foundation for a thriving society, both now and in the long term.

However, competing challenges such as climate change, population growth, resource scarcity, social inequities, ecosystem fragility and tightened budgets are placing a strain on the built environment, societies and our planet.

Owners and operators of infrastructure assets must also think about regulatory compliance and the impact of the external environment on their business and asset performance. On top of this, the expectations of diverse stakeholders – including beneficiaries, local communities and investors – must be managed.

What can we do for you?

We help you address the risks and opportunities that ESG (environmental, societal and governance) factors present for your business. Our integrated ESG and sustainability team draw on decades of experience working across the built environment to embed interventions that consider carbon, climate resilience, nature and people.

Improve ESG performance

We can advise you on both sides of the double materiality concept. Double materiality covers, on one side, the climate, environmental and social risks and opportunities for you and your projects (which can be financial, operational or reputational) and, on the other side, the impact of your activities, projects and investments on the environment and our society.

With our support, you can identify the right changes in strategy, sourcing and implementation, select the most appropriate ESG and sustainability frameworks, and demonstrate responsibility to your stakeholders. We advise on the route to realising the business benefits of going beyond regulatory compliance, making practical recommendations for doing so.

Reduce risks and maximise opportunities

Our ESG and sustainability team are global. One of our core strengths is our connectedness – the ability to join up our multidisciplinary expertise to address effectively the challenges specific to your location, situation and market. We help you to prioritise actionable interventions that create the most value for your businesses and its stakeholders by understanding your specific ESG and sustainability risks and opportunities.

Increase positive impact

Your assets are part of interconnected sectoral, national and global systems that provide services for people. Our skill sets help you to better see that bigger picture. Our advisory and digital capabilities allow you to visualise the impacts of your activities, projects and investments on the environment and society, enabling insight-based and intelligent decision making.

Driving ESG and sustainability in global projects

We can help you along your ESG and sustainability journey through our multidisciplinary expertise.

Our experience

We have advised a range of clients on their ESG and sustainability journeys, including:

  • Biopower feasibility study, New Jersey, USA
In Livingston, New Jersey, our study demonstrated that a combined heat and power system at the wastewater treatment facility would be technically, economically, and legally feasible. The project would provide an environmental benefit by reducing the facility’s overall carbon footprint, reducing air emissions, and fulfilling the Township’s desire to implement green projects at the facility.
  • Environment Agency, UK
We are enabling a rapid reduction in the Environment Agency’s infrastructure carbon by using our knowledge and influence to facilitate cross-industry dialogue essential for achieving a net zero society and limiting damaging impacts of climate change.
  • Heathrow Airport, London, UK
We designed a programme for Europe’s busiest airport to help it meet its carbon reduction target of 2.3Mt by the end of 2026, and to transform the business and its supply chain towards becoming net zero by 2050.
  • South Western Railway, UK
We developed a plan for South Western Railway to manage railway habitats along more than 5000km of track in ways that enhance biodiversity, increase carbon sequestration and boost resilience to climate change. Our focus was to support a step change in thinking so that habitats are not just a constraint but a fundamental asset for a sustainable, resilient and reliable railway.
