Defence nuclear

Powering the ultimate deterrent.

Delivering and maintaining the infrastructure and equipment for a modern nuclear defence deterrent is a huge responsibility, requiring highly skilled teams, facilities and capabilities.

But with nuclear defence technology constantly evolving and the threats it is designed to counter ever changing, this is a complex undertaking.

New projects often share sites with existing operational assets, which means it is critical to avoid or minimise disruption when innovative technical and logistical solutions are being developed.

We understand that the design of nuclear defence facilities for manufacturing, maintenance and operations all need to be considered in parallel, and that safety and security are paramount.

What can we do for you?

Choosing the right partner is essential. With over 30 years of sector experience, and an even longer heritage in the civilian nuclear industry, our multidisciplinary teams have the right qualifications, experience and clearance to deliver these vital projects and programmes.

Improve performance

By deploying standardisation, modern methods of construction, and digital and automated tools, we can optimise designs to achieve value for programmes and productivity in operations.

Design for resilience

There is a careful balance to strike between designing for the long service life expected from nuclear assets and the need for cost efficiency. Our solutions provide high integrity, resilience, safety and security, while avoiding excessive use of materials and minimising embodied and operational carbon emissions.

Deliver with certainty

Our available pool of suitably qualified and experienced professionals means we can ramp up delivery capability at critical times. We are able to meet demanding schedules while our security mindset and information systems provide assurance that data is protected.

Create lasting value

We can develop manufacturing and operational facilities alongside local communities in a way that enhances skills and career opportunities. They will be environmentally and economically sustainable and leave a positive legacy.

Services we provide

Securing the future with advanced nuclear defence solutions

We work across the lifecycle of nuclear defence infrastructure and facilities, offering integrated design, engineering and management solutions that support you where most needed.

Our experience

We have been supporting nuclear projects in the defence sector since the 1980s and are a well-established partner for the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), the Royal Navy and prime defence contractors in the maintenance of the UK’s continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent. Examples of our work include:

  • Devonport Royal Dockyard, Plymouth, UK
In partnership with Costain we are delivery partner, supporting site owner and operator Babcock on the 10 Dock Programme at Devonport Royal Dockyard near Plymouth.
  • FNICAP, HMNB Clyde, UK
For over a decade we’ve been a key partner to the DIO in delivering the Faslane Nuclear Infrastructure Continuous Availability Programme (FNICAP), updating the docks and facilities that service the UK’s fleet of nuclear submarines.
  • HMAS Stirling, Perth, Australia
As part of the AUKUS defence partnership between the UK, the USA and Australia, we’re supporting the developing infrastructure needs for the new Dreadnought and SSN-AUKUS class submarines, including the upgrade of an existing submarine base in Western Australia to enable it to host nuclear powered submarines by the 2030s.
  • Nuclear support hub, HMNB Clyde, UK
We designed and developed replacement processing facilities – including a liquid effluent treatment plant, workshop, storage facilities, pontoon and discharge pipeline – that will allow the safe and environmental disposal of nuclear waste for decades to come.
  • Submarine escape, rescue, abandonment and survival facility (SMERAS), HMNB Clyde, UK
We designed three bespoke training facilities for the Royal Navy at HMNB Clyde – including a centre for experiential underwater training – that that will allow naval personnel to undergo a range of specialist submarine training at a single location.

Land Management

Land Management captures and makes available information about land ownership and access that is essential for smooth project development. The solution records and provides instant access to these details, plus information on surveys and stakeholder communications.
