About the business unit

The Buildings Unit (BLD) has a major presence in Mott MacDonald's regional offices throughout the UK and mainland Europe, providing a wide range of diverse and transferable cross-sector skills across five key Sectors; Advisory, Built Environment, Energy, Transportation and Water. We also provide local services to customers and technical leadership to the rest of the Group in these sectors.

Overview of role

Climate change is among the biggest threats facing humanity. Mott MacDonald is taking a position of leadership – using our knowledge, ingenuity and influence to help the world successfully transition to a low carbon future. Do you have the drive and passion to help us deliver solutions that reduce greenhouse gas emissions by default? If so, we have an exciting role in that could be just what you’re looking for.

Our Net Zero Carbon Advisory Team is growing rapidly, and we are seeking highly motivated individuals to join our team of energy performance and carbon management professionals. As the successful Principal Energy Consultant – Net Zero Advisory, you will be part of the team truly living and applying our commitment to be net zero by the end of 2040 (and we are exploring options for bringing forward that date).

In addition, in 2020 we were independently certified as carbon neutral globally obtaining PAS2060, and ISO14064 accreditation for carbon reporting, both firsts in our industry.

As the successful candidate, you will join an established and innovative team of advisors and consultants, delivering an exciting portfolio of work in the public and private sectors.

As you contribute to the collective growth of our team’s capability, we will offer you exceptional opportunities for technical and management skillset development and long term career progression.

Your role will be rewarding and varied, and responsibilities will typically include

  • Supporting the development of technical solutions and energy strategies to help the Buildings and Infrastructure sector meet governmental and local ‘net zero carbon’ targets, focusing on both heat and power
  • Carry out energy audits of a range of sites in the public and private sector, identifying opportunities for improvement and quantifying capital costs and savings, including opportunities for low to net zero heat and power solutions (i.e. heat networks, localised renewable technologies and hydrogen futures)
  • Developing energy reports for clients, clearly and concisely summarising findings of energy audits and site surveys.
  • Understanding and communicating ‘net zero carbon’ policies to clients, in support of them setting their own ‘net zero carbon’ aspirations and developing action plans to meet defined outcomes.
  • Carrying out energy modelling analysis and energy audits for a range of new and existing building projects. The role will have a focus on operational energy emissions reduction, but will require an understanding of ‘whole life’ carbon impacts of projects
  • Interfacing net zero carbon advisory with wider buildings and infrastructure outcome needs, such as environmental parameters to achieve ‘healthy buildings’ and whole life cost effectiveness in operation
  • Carrying out due diligence of third party low carbon and net zero carbon project reports, drawings, specifications, energy analysis and cost models
  • Ensuring the production of deliverables to agreed timelines and within budget
  • Supporting business development related activities, identifying opportunities/prospects to allow us to prepare/position the team to produce winning proposals
  • Supporting the development of client relationships to provide good prospects and repeat business
  • Contributing to winning new work; client-facing at a senior level
