About the division

Environmental and social considerations are central to Mott MacDonald’s Purpose and its offerings across all sectors and territories. Our environment and social business provides essential services and innovative solutions which anticipate our clients' needs across all sectors.

A fundamental part of this is respecting each person’s differences and striving to meet their needs.

Overview of the role:

The legislative and investment-driven focus on nature is accelerating, with increased recognition that economies and societies depend on thriving and resilient ecosystems. Mott MacDonald are leading the way in Nature Services, and we are looking for people to join our Natural Capital Team, helping clients to recognise the intrinsic value of the natural environment and account for the benefits that it provides.

We pride ourselves on developing and driving innovative approaches to better incorporate environmental risks and opportunities into decision-making. We have developed our bespoke Natural Capital Assessment, underpinned by the Mott MacDonald UK Natural Capital Map, to support clients with strategic assessments. Our assessment methodology was recently used to support a number of water companies across the South East to deliver hundreds of option appraisal assessments for the 2024 Water Resource Management Plans (WRMPs).

We have a large portfolio of projects and a healthy forward-order book, as clients are shifting their focus from simply minimising environmental impact to pursuing more ambitious environmental and social outcomes. Our recent projects include undertaking carbon sequestration assessments for Heathrow Nature Networks, Oxford University, and East West Rail, appraising environmental benefits for schemes like Cranbrook Counter Drain and Hebden Bridge, undertaking large-scale natural capital assessments for major developers in the Middle East, developing environmental net gain assessments for NPR and London Water Recycling, and appraising decision-support tools for the 10,000 Raingardens for Scotland Project.

Joining our team as an Nature and Environmental Consultant, you will have a balance of technical-based work, environmental coordination, and business development. You will lead natural capital and environmental net gain assessments, working with clients to respond to new and forthcoming legislation, and collaborate across environmental discipline teams to help projects identify potential benefits that can be delivered by good environmental design, such as carbon sequestration and storage, air pollutant removal, clean water, flood protection, food production, and recreational opportunities.

The projects you will be working on can span all stages of a project’s life cycle, from design conception to implementation; giving opportunities to positively influence scheme design, and enhancements and promote best practice.

Although you will be a member of the Natural Capital team, you will also be connected to the much larger team delivering Nature Services. There are excellent opportunities to progress your career through promotion, as well as develop a key role within our Natural Capital team. Our team is continually looking to expand our technical expertise and there will be opportunities to explore new methods in Opportunities and Constraints Mapping, Scenario-Analysis, Environmental Monitoring, Environmental Net Gain, and Natural Capital Assessment.

The role will suit a dynamic, proactive team-player who wants to work in a growth area of the business and help support the delivery of Mott MacDonald’s Nature Services in a fast-moving, client-focused, commercial environment.
