About the business unit 
We help conceive, drive, and implement transport solutions for cities, regions, and asset owners/operators around the globe. From preparing the business case and​ advising on related issues - such as revenue, procurement, and environmental legislation - to delivering the completed infrastructure and helping maintain it. Our planning, engineering, environmental and management skills cover the whole project cycle. We play a major role in developing and delivering the Global Transport Sector Strategy.

 

Your Role:
We have an exciting opportunity in our Heavy Civil Infrastructure (HCI) Division where we are looking for a new Development Manager. This is a key role in the divisional senior leadership team.


Sitting within the Transport Unit, HCI is the major project delivery division of Mott MacDonald with a primary focus on major civil infrastructure projects in the transport market as well as in the Energy and the Water markets. We have a clear ambition to be the leading provider of heavy civil engineering design services and the preferred design partner for contractors on major civil infrastructure D&B projects across the UK, and we are looking for a Development Manager to help us achieve this ambition.

 

As the Development Manager, you will be at the heart of our mission, driving the business winning capability (WIN) within the division. Reporting directly to the Divisional General Manager and with direct involvement with the Unit Development Manager, you will be a crucial part of our Transport unit development manager community. 
As well as major civil infrastructure project delivery, the HCI division encompasses Ground Engineering, Bridges and Civil Structures and Tunnels, as well as providing civil asset management, special analysis, materials and information management services.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Strategy: Provide visionary leadership and strategic direction to our business planning and client relationship development, ensuring a robust and sustainable pipeline of work.
  • Opportunity Positioning: Identify and capture the right opportunities, crafting compelling value propositions and assembling top-notch bid teams to secure successful outcomes.
  • Business Planning: Collaborate with the HCI Executive Leadership Team to organise the annual divisional business planning seminar and develop our comprehensive business plan. Conduct scenario testing to navigate market opportunities effectively.
  • Capability Building: Foster and develop effective account and sector leadership through coaching, directing, and role modelling. Monitor WIN and account performance, deploying timely interventions as needed.
  • Client Engagement: Work with the Divisional Regional Director, Principal Account Leads, Major Pursuits Leads, Regional Account Leads, and Account Leads to engage clients meaningfully and maintain a competitive edge in the marketplace.
  • Profile Raising: Champion the HCI profile through enhanced internal and external communications and industry presence.

 

This is an opportunity to be instrumental in shaping the future of heavy civil engineering. You'll play a pivotal role in converting prospects into revenue, supporting growth post-HS2, and ensuring HCI remains at the forefront of the industry.

 

Candidate specification:
Professional qualification, equivalent relevant experience will be considered in lieu of qualifications:

  • Background of engineering design delivery in one or more areas of heavy civil infrastructure
  • Significant senior development or operational experience including strategy development and leadership.
  • Demonstrated history of meeting sales targets and a track record of managing major winning bids 
  • Proven experience of effectively setting up partnerships with other companies and negotiating contracts and agreements with various stakeholders, such as partners, suppliers and clients.
  • Strong experience in design and build markets and major heavy civil infrastructure projects, including a strong network of contacts and relationships. 
  • Capable of presenting strong and succinct messages to different audiences, as well as creating rapport and respect with clients and colleagues.
  • Ability to build strong, collaborative relationships internally and externally.
  • An ability to articulate and communicate the vision and strategy of HCI and align actions and decisions with the strategic goals and objectives.
  • Skills to adapt to changing situations and environments and respond quickly and proactively to emerging opportunities and risks.
  • Ability to provide support and mentoring to the win team and drive best in class account leadership behaviours and activity.
