Job Description:
 
We are seeking a Communications Specilist to support the NNP team and the Ministry of Education to ensure that the right information about the national numeracy reforms gets to the right audiences to influence behaviours, increase understanding and to help achieve the Ministry of Education’s goal – a strong foundation in mathematics for all young learners in Malawi.
 
Principal Duties/Tasks and responsibilities:
  • Developing communication strategy for the scale-up phase of NNP
  • Conceptualising and implementing communications plans and campaigns
  • Developing and writing communications and awareness raising materials, including learning briefs, press releases, e-newsletters, blog posts and social media content.
  • Maintaining and updating the programme website with engaging content to attract new audiences and increase visits to the site
  • Creating relevant digital media (photos and videos) and managing digital media archives
  • Conducting media outreach to increase the visibility of the NNP among target audiences
  • Ensuring that all NNP communications align with Mott MacDonald and FCDO branding requirements.

Candidate Specification:
 
 Required skills and experience
  • Significant experience in a communications or marketing role
  • Must possess exceptional writing skills and be able to compose engaging and accurate technical content
  • Understanding of communications (including social media), public relations and marketing best practices
  • Strong communicator with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to think strategically and identify ways to improve communication efforts
  • Must be creative, resourceful and able to take initiative with minimal direction
 
Desirable
  • Previous experience with donor funded development/ education  programmes
  • Ability to use Adobe PhotoShop, InDesign, Canva or other graphic design tools.

The National Numeracy Programme in Malawi (NNP) aims to improve student learning outcomes in mathematics so that girls and boys have a solid foundation in basic skills to success in the rest of their schooling and fulfil their potential. The programme provides technical assistance to the Ministry of Education to revise the mathematics curriculum for lower primary (standard 1-4), develop corresponding teaching and learning materials, design teacher training strategies (including school-based support structures), rigorously pilot the new materials and training strategies, document impact, refine the materials and training strategies, and then oversee a national scale-up.  The programme has recently been scaled up to all the public primary schools across the country.
The programme is led by the Ministry of Education with technical assistance from Cambridge Education, a member of the Mott MacDonald Group.
