At Mott MacDonald, there's a genuine sense of trust in people to do their jobs without unnecessary stress. Being employee-owned makes a real difference — it's about delivering for our clients and investing in the company's long-term success.
I started as an electrician because three electrical apprenticeships were available at the local council where my dad worked, compared to only one plumbing apprenticeship, so I liked my odds better. That small decision shaped my career. It's a good reminder that careers aren't always about a master plan—they evolve based on opportunities and the choices we make along the way.
I started in the Birmingham building services team, then became regional practice leader for the UK and Europe, and now I lead the global building services practice. Each step has given me a bigger platform to make an impact and support the development of others in the industry.
I've learned that technical excellence means more than knowing your subject—it's about how well you share knowledge and apply it to solve real problems. I've worked closely with healthcare trusts to assess the impact of electrification on their estates and with UK defence estates, where resilience is critical. These projects have shown me the importance of taking a big-picture approach.
My role is all about sharing technical excellence across different regions and disciplines. How we work in one part of the world can improve what we do elsewhere. I help connect the dots, so we're not just delivering sound engineering — we're learning from each other and continuously improving.
Our designs should always have a positive impact, whether reducing carbon emissions, making buildings more resilient, or creating better places to live and work. As Practice Leader, I'm also focused on increasing diversity in our field because better representation means better ideas and outcomes.
My role is global, and I travel when needed to meet teams and support projects. But I also believe that international collaboration doesn't have to mean getting on a plane — we need to be thoughtful about how we connect and share knowledge in an effective and sustainable way.
I am proud of how I have given back to the industry. I created an electrical services master's degree module. I chair our professional engineering institution's talent pipeline and apprenticeships panel. I am an interviewer for the engineering council and end-point assessor, and I was part of a team that created an award-winning building services activity for STEM Learning.
We are looking for enthusiastic, inspiring, and committed people to join our growing team.
