However, these advances come with challenges, as healthcare systems must respond to change and meet citizens’ growing needs and expectations in ways that are financially and clinically sustainable.

Food fortification programme, Pakistan. We managed this five-year food fortification programme to increase production and access to wheat flour fortified with iron and folic acid, and edible oils fortified with vitamin A.

Dengue fever control, South East AsiaWe piloted a project that used guppy fish in household water jars to consume the larvae of the mosquito that transmits dengue fever. This biological intervention was backed up by community education and communications on how to use guppies to prevent the spread of dengue. The project achieved an 80% potential reduction in dengue infections.

Fleming Fund, internationallyBetter intelligence is urgently needed to strengthen the global response to antimicrobial resistance. This is especially important in low and middle income countries, where people are most vulnerable to the impact of drug resistant infections. As a response, the UK government announced the Fleming Fund in 2015, and in 2016 the fund launched the Country Grant, Regional Grant and Fellowships programme, designed and managed by us. As programme manager, by 2024 we were managing 22 country and 11 regional grants, had gathered data from 155 countries and supported the development of 170 national action plans.

Food fortification program, PakistanAs many as 37.5M people in Pakistan do not receive proper nourishment; each year 250,000 children die without having reached their fifth birthday, due to factors related to malnutrition. We managed this five-year food fortification programme to increase production and access to wheat flour fortified with iron and folic acid, and edible oils fortified with vitamin A. The programme worked with 1000 wheat mills and 100 oil mills, focusing on quality control, regulatory compliance, testing, storage, distribution and affordability.

Technical resource facility, PakistanWe managed this long-term programme to deliver high quality maternal and child health services. In our role, we developed a roadmap for the rollout of healthcare, enabling health departments to plan, allocate resources, track where and when interventions have taken place, and monitor the impacts on children’s and women’s health.
