Transport
We’ve been associated with some of the most strategic transport developments in Ireland’s recent history. In the rail sector, we provided engineering services for the country's first mass transit system (DART) and later extended the system north and south of Dublin. We have been involved in the Dublin LRT (LUAS) from inception to commissioning of the Red and Green lines and in the extensions to Cherrywood, The Point and Citywest.
Our roads portfolio features the N7/N11 Arklow-Rathnew and Newlands Cross PPP project, the N25 Waterford Bypass PPP project, Dundalk Western Bypass PPP Scheme, the N18 Ennis Bypass, the N13/N14 Lifford to Mannorcunningham scheme, N25 Kinsale Road Interchange, the N25/N30 New Ross Bypass, the N11/N25 Oilgate-Rosslare scheme and the Ballyogan Road realignment project.
The 23km Waterford Bypass includes both dual and single carriageways and a total of 50 major viaduct and interchange structures. The centrepiece is a 465m cable-stayed bridge over the River Suir. Our role included initial feasibility study, followed by route selection, environmental impact assessment, toll studies, geotechnical investigations design review, construction monitoring and advice during operation and maintenance.
Some of our bridge projects include the Sean Heuston Bridge refurbishment, Halfpenny Bridge refurbishment in Dublin, Ballynahattin rail bridge and Cork Docklands River Crossing.
Port developments also feature in our portfolio. Our track record includes harbour facilities at Ringaskiddy, projects at Rossaveel Harbour, the extension to wharf at Dinish Island and building projects for Dublin Port Company.
Power
We provided front end engineering, environmental impact assessment and planning drawings for a 430MW combined cycle gas turbine and 180MW open cycle gas turbine power plant at Derrygreenagh, County Offaly.
We've undertaken environmental impact assessments for the development of a 430MW combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) at Great Island, County Wexford and a 450MW CCGT at Tarbert Island County Kerry. The sites were sensitive due to the immediate proximity of sites protected under the EU Habitats Directive and Birds Directive.
In the transmission and distribution sector we completed feasibility studies, outline design and a foreshore licence application for two 3km 220kV submarine cable circuits across Cork harbour and Shannon Estuary.
Water and environment
We're contributed to water infrastructure including major drainage works in Limerick, Cork and Waterford cities, water treatment systems in counties Cork, Clare, Kerry and Cavan and flood defences in Clonmel and Carrick on Suir. One of our flagship projects is the Cork Main drainage scheme which includes the largest wastewater treatment in Ireland outside of Dublin serving a population of 413,000. The scheme also includes a 2.6km interceptor sewer constructed as a 1.5m diameter bored tunnel. Another flagship project is the water treatment plant at Ennis in County Clare which is the largest membrane treatment plant in Ireland treating a public water supply.
We have also had a major role in the development of national and regional strategies intended to implement EU Directives. We were the lead consultant for the development of the river basin management plans for two of the five river basins in Ireland. We also prepared a preliminary flood risk assessment and management study on behalf of the Office of Public Works as part of the implementation of the EU Floods Directive.
Buildings
Our design experience covers a range of building types from education to office, hotels and leisure facilities.
The University College Cork student centre extension features a striking glazed facade and new amphitheatre. We provided full structural and civil design services for the University College Cork Student Centre extension and Honan Square development.
For the Castlemartyr Hotel and golf course in Cork we provided civil, structural, conservation and transport engineering design for the refurbishment and extension of an existing 18th century lodge into a five star leisure facility.
The headquarters of the EU Food & Veterinary Inspectorate is the first head office of an EU agency located in Ireland. We provided civil and structural design and site supervision.
Industry
We draw on the Group’s expertise, to assist the development of various industrial projects. For the Pfizer Tabletting Plant in Ringaskiddy, we provided quantity surveying, permitting issues, site development, architectural, building services, structural and civil design engineering for two buildings and its associated structures.
Working with Irish Cement we took overall responsibility for managing design and procurement of all civil, structural, building services and environmental elements, followed by construction supervision for a new kiln line at their Platin cement works. We also provided planning, programming and cost control for the overall project at construction stage. This €200M investment is one of the most modern and energy efficient plants in the world and increases Platin’s annual capacity to 2.8M tonnes.
