Infrastructure development
In 2012, a consortium led by Mott MacDonald was awarded a contract by the European Commission to help strengthen essential infrastructure development across the Western Balkans. The consortium will provide technical assistance as part of the Infrastructure Projects Facility of the Western Balkans Investment Framework. The Facility prepares priority infrastructure projects that are key to socioeconomic development in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Kosovo.
Water
In Serbia, Belgrade’s municipal water services have been adversely affected by limited investment and societal changes. Addressing this, Belgrade city identified investments to remedy environmental damage and improve water supply levels of service. We led a technical, legal, and financial advisory team appointed by the European Agency for Reconstruction to advise on the best form of private sector participation for Belgrade’s water sector. This supports the overall aim to improve standard of water and wastewater services by developing optimal capital investments.
Environment
Our environmental experts were involved in training a selection of media professionals in the Western Balkans to develop their environmental knowledge and awareness to help them in their reporting of environmental issues. Other aims of this government-commissioned project included establishing a network of environmental journalists in the region, enhancing the ability of media professionals to conduct independent research using information technology, and maximizing the ability of trainees to stay up-to-date on the state of environmental science.
For the Danube River pollution reduction project, uuuuuuuu we prepared a strategy and action plan to adopt and implement the Nitrates Directive for Serbia, as well as the proposal for transposing it into local legislation. The directive is a significant piece of environmental legislation to impact European agriculture as it acknowledges that farming is a main source of nitrate in ground, surface and marine waters. Its two main aims are to reduce water pollution caused or induced by nitrates from agricultural sources and prevent further occurrences of such pollution.
Communications
For the UK's Department for International Development, we provided the design, procurement, and supervision of installation for a VSAT (very small aperture satellite terminal) system to facilitate communication between a joint coordination center and Bosnia’s three main power control centers. The system allows simultaneous transmission of speech and CSADA data communication to and from each center.
Oil and gas
In Bosnia, Mott MacDonald assisted BH-Gas with procurement and monitoring of an extension to the gas pipeline transmission system at Zenica. The EBRD approved a loan of up to €17 million towards the project. The proposed high-pressure gas pipeline will transport natural gas from Zenica to Travnik, supplying gas to the Travnik, Vitez, Busovaca, and Novi Travnik municipalities.
